Mercedes-Benz will unveil a new small car concept at the Shanghai motor show later this month which points the way to the next-generation A-class due later this year.

The new car dumps the current W169 A-class sandwich construction and tall, MPV-style body for a more conventional two-box hatchback shape, making it a direct rival for the Volkswagen Golf and other B-segment cars.

Concept A-class is front-wheel drive and powered by a four-cylinder petrol engine from the new M270 family which was designed for transverse installation. Turbocharged and direct injected it is said to blend high performance with 'minimal' emissions and low fuel consumption. The Concept A-class has a 2.0-litre engine developing 210hp, and a new Mercedes-Benz dual clutch transmission.

Mercedes is reported to be readying four new cars to replace the current W169 A-class and W245 B-class. The A-class hatchback will be followed by a B-class MPV, a crossover and a four-door coupé – all built on a new compact car platform.
