BMW's Concept M5, which makes its world debut at Auto Shanghai later this month, is a preview of the 2012 M5 production car.

Details are limited ahead of the Shanghai unveiling, but the Concept M5 and the F10M production car will be powered by a twin-turbo V8 engine, a development of the 4.4-litre unit already available in the 6-series, 7-series, X5 and X6. Currently the most powerful variant is the 555bhp (563ps) unit in the X5M/X6M, but the M5 is expected to have more – probably around 570bhp. Whatever the eventual figure, the new M5 is certain to offer considerable more mid-range torque than the old E60 M5, which ceased production in 2010.

BMW will also use Auto Shanghai 2011 to reveal the new 6-series coupé, to introduce Asian markets to the BMW Vision ConnectedDrive and ActiveE concepts and the 1-series Coupé and Convertible production cars, and to unveil a plug-in hybrid version of the long-wheelbase 5-series developed with Chinese partner Brilliance.
