Fiat's TwinAir engine has been named 2011 International Engine of the Year. The 875cc twin-cylinder engine also won in the Best New Engine, Green Engine of the Year and Sub 1-litre categories.

The Fiat group also secured two more class wins, with Ferrari's 4.5-litre V8 winning Best Performance Engine and the Above 4-litre class.

Volkswagen's 1.4-litre TSI Twincharger engine, winner of the overall award for the last two years, was second in 2011.

All but one of the 11 category winners was a petrol engine – the single diesel winner being BMW's 2.0-litre TwinPower unit.
